Event name: Behaviour Detectives

Description: Most parents have questions about their children’s misbehaviour. In fact, most good parents worry, fret, or puzzle over their children, at times blaming themselves or wondering where they have gone wrong. We would say “join the crowd,” as there are legions of parents left with uncertainties and perhaps lacklustre answers in their search for why children behave the way they do. This is especially true in cases of cared for children, as at times they enter homes with unseen histories of neglect, abuse, exploitation, or sometimes simply a lack of parenting. When carers confront nagging questions about these children’s behaviour, and go out in search of answers, they find they often come up empty. Parents and professionals alike need to ask the right questions, and seek the correct answers to help carers figure out and address their children’s misbehaviour. It really is being a “behaviour detective”: being a keen observer, noticing things that many other parents don’t, getting beneath what is obvious to noticing what is missing, and it involves curiosity, wonder, creativity, and a dose of healthy skepticism, all aimed at asking why the child does what he does, or doesn’t do what he needs to. This training will blend theory and practice, presenting a model for unraveling such behavioural mysteries, and address thoughtful solutions and interventions for such unfortunately common behavioural problems as lying, stealing, defiance and opposition, negative attention seeking, and poor relationships. The focus will be on practical, straightforward ways of understanding such childhood mysteries, helping carers to get on the right track and find the elusive answers to the riddles of children’s misbehaviour.”

Event name: 4th National Social Work Continuing Professional Development Conference - Integrated Practice

Description: What do we mean by integrated practice in social work? Does it refer to improved linking between services, as a response to criticisms of a dangerous lack of communication? Is it about ending responses from services that separate a person’s life and relationships into disparate areas? Integrated practice remains ill-defined and may be seen by workers as merely a threat to their professional identity. This conference will open up discussion around a range of dimensions of integration related to social work, grounded in the integration between research and practice. Speakers and workshops will consider integration between Health, Social Services and Education, integration of services across the lifespan, integration between adult mental health and the needs of children and integration between theory and practice. In line with the recommendations of the Social Work Task Force, it will refocus social work towards integrated, effective and innovative practice.

Event name: The Future of Corporate Parenting in Wales: Best Practice and Reform

Description: Corporate Parenting is the collective responsibility of a council to provide the best possible care and protection for children who are ‘looked after’. But what does excellent Corporate Parenting mean for Councillors and Senior Managers? What is the difference between the roles within Corporate Parenting? And what challenges lie ahead for Corporate Parents in implementing the Care Matters agenda? According to Gwenda Thomas AM, Deputy Minister for Social Services, it is the belief of the Welsh Government that a child is best brought up within their families, but in circumstances where the state has to fill that place, excellence is essential. This unique one day conference explores these issues with senior speakers from across the sector. It will give delegates the opportunity to be briefed on the latest policy and legislative developments, hear about best practice from across Wales and discuss ways in which we can all work together to give every child the start in life we would want for our own children.

This day is an opportunity for adopters and carers to openly discuss their dilemmas and difficulties with contact in a supportive environment with other parents.

Event name: The Future of Services for Disabled Children: Best Practice and Support

Description: The Government wants disabled children to be a priority, both nationally and locally: a commitment confirmed in the NHS operating framework, the Child Health Strategy, Healthy lives, brighter futures and in the Children’s Plan. It has also made a commitment to make the UK the best place in Europe for children to grow up in. Currently 7% of children in the UK are disabled and steps must be taken to close the gap in achievement between disabled children and their peers. The government has made a great deal of progress over the past few years in sculpting the transformation progress for services for disabled children. It is widely acknowledged that the Aiming High for Disabled Children programme and Healthy Lives Brighter Futures strategy, both launched in 2007, was a real jump in the right direction and has successfully ‘Improved service provision across the board for disabled children and their families, enhancing equality and opportunity for them’. This unique one day conference explores issues such as how to enable parents, the voluntary sector, health services, education and social services to work with each other effectively and also how to achieve efficiency in commissioning. Senior speakers from across the sector will address these issues in an open and welcoming environment. Delegates will be briefed on the latest policy and legislative developments, and essential advice on how to ensure partnerships between local services and organisations are effective. This conference will also assess progress to date in providing disabled children with the best possible services in order for them to achieve their full potential. “We believe that we have reached a set of actions and proposals that will make a real difference to all disabled children and their families, and create a local and national focus on promoting the life chances of disabled children and their families.” - Lord Adonis and Ed Balls- Foreword, Aiming High for Disabled Children Only £149 if you book before 1st September Call: 0203 393 7394 or email d.goodstien@carematterspartnership.co.uk

Event name: The Future of Services for Young Mums and Dads: Best Practice and Support

Description: In 2008, there were 708,711 children born in England and Wales of which 25% were born to parents under the age of 24 and 6.3% to parents under the age of 20. Whilst lots of recent policy and media interest has focused on reducing teenage pregnancy (DCSF ten year teenage pregnancy strategy aims to reduce this by half by 2010), there is little that focuses on practical ways to best support young mothers and fathers. A strong relationship between early parenthood and deprivation has been identified as an issue for public concern highlighting the need to look at what further ways can work to best support young parents; get back into education, have the emotional support they need, have adequate housing and learn the parenting skills needed to ensure that every child and young person born to a young parent is provided with the best possible start in life. This unique one day conference offers delegates the opportunity to explore the future role all associated professionals will play in ensuring that all young parents are provided with the relevant information to give them the best opportunities for themselves and their children. It will facilitate professionals to develop the expertise they need, ranging from good parenting strategies to effective implementation. We will hear from trailblazing local authorities, policy makers, frontline practitioners and academic experts who will inform on best practice, development and future strategy. The programme is designed to be interactive, encouraging good debate and exchange of ideas.
